1 9x13 baking dish
1 medium bowl
1 whisk
aluminum foil
- 12 slices sourdough bread
- 16 oz ham diced
- 2 cups cheddar cheese shredded
- 2 cups gouda cheese shredded
- 6 eggs
- ½ cup butter melted
- 3 cups milk
- 1 can non-stick cooking spray
Spray a 9x13 with non-stick cooking spray.
You will layer your ingredients in the pan. First, add ½ of the bread, then ½ of the cheese, and then ½ of the ham. Repeat with the second half of the ingredients- bread, cheese, and ham.
In a medium bowl, whisk the milk, butter, and eggs together.
Pour over the dry ingredients.
Cover with aluminum foil and pop in the refrigerator for 8 hours or overnight.
The next morning, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
Bake for 45-55 minutes or until set.
- Make sure that you grease the baking dish well so that the strata doesn’t stick to the pan.
- Let the strata sit for at least 15 minutes before serving to allow the ingredients to settle.
- Your strata is done when you pull a toothpick out of the center and it remains clean or if the center of the strata is solid and no longer jiggles when shaken.
- You can add extra cheese to the top and finish under the broiler for 2-3 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
- If the strata starts to burn or is browning too quickly you can cover with aluminum foil for the first 40 minutes of baking. Remove the foil and continue to bake for an additional 15 minutes so the top gets nice and golden brown.
