Equipment

  • 1 apple peeler
  • 1 sharp knife
  • 1 8 x 8 baking dish

Ingredients

  • 6 large green or red apples
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and diced
  • 1 teaspoon corn starch
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease an 8 x 8 baking dish.
  • Peel and slice your apples.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine your water, flour, and cornstarch. Whisk until the corn starch is dissolved.
  • Add your brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, lemon juice, and nutmeg and mix well.
  • Add the apples to the bowl and mix. Pour them in the prepared baking dish and top the apples with the diced butter.
  • Cover and bake for 30 minutes. Stir every ten minutes.

Notes

Make even slices to ensure the apples all cook uniformly.
Use a tart apple to compliment the sweetness of the cinnamon mixture.
Test your apples and bake them until the are soft with a slight crunch to them. You don't want them mushy. It's like pasta. Cook until al denté.
