Tips for Cooking a Pork Steak

  • For best results, let the meat come to room temperature before cooking to allow for juicier tender pork steaks.
  • Using a paper towel, pat both sides of the meat to remove any moisture. This will allow the steak to get a great caramelized exterior.
  • Before you add the ingredients to the pan, make sure that the skillet is screaming hot. Cast iron skillets are the best for cooking the perfect steak because they conduct heat so beautifully. You should hear the steaks sizzle as soon as they hit the pan.
  • In order to keep your steaks from drying out, make sure that you are checking the internal temperature frequently with a meat thermometer. You want to pull the steaks of the stove once the temperature reads 140 degrees F.
  • Make sure that you allow your steaks to rest for at least 5 minutes so that the juices redistribute and meat stays nice and tender.

Other Ways to Cook Pork Steak

  • Since pork steak is a fattier cut of pork, this is a great option to use in a stew or with any simple recipe that needs to cook low and slow.
  • Using a crock pot is a great way to cook the pork so that the fat renders and allows the meat to stay juicy without drying it out.
  • You could substitute pork steak for your pot roast for a more subtle, less beefy flavor.
  • You can also cook a good pork steak in your preheated oven to allow the meat to slowly cook, and keep from burning on the stovetop.
  • This is a great method to use if you have marinated your pork steak and want to keep the steak juicy and tender on the inside and caramelized on the outside.
  • Using a sheet pan with a wire rack is the best way to ensure that air is allowed to circulate, allowing for a more moist steak.
  • You can also bbq pork steaks with your favorite bbq seasonings on low-medium heat for up to 20-25 minutes on each side using your charcoal grill.

What Should I Serve with My Steak?

  • This recipe is great served on a bed of fluffy white rice and with some steamed broccoli, for a simple weeknight dinner.
  • Serving alongside a side dish of some roasted vegetables and potatoes is another great way to eat this delicious meal.
  • Try my crispy potatoes and onions for a family friendly side that everyone will love.

How Do I Store Leftover Pork Steak?

  • Leftover pork steak should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • To reheat the pork steak, preheat your oven to 250 degrees F and allow the meat to sit at room temperature for at least 10 minutes.
  • Put the pork steak on a baking sheet and cook for about 10-15 minutes, or until the meat is warmed through.
  • I love to use leftover pork steak for easy pork tacos or breakfast hash. Just dice up the warmed steak and serve on top of crispy potatoes and onions and top with a fried egg, salsa and some green onions.
  • You can do the same thing using a warm tortilla, cotija cheese, avocado and topped with some cilantro and salsa.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Should I marinate my pork steak?

Using a marinade is a great way to allow for any meat to have a rich and robust flavor. It is important to know that using a marinade with any citrus or acidic ingredients for too long will start cooking the meat, and causing a more chewy texture. I would recommend marinating with a rub rather than a liquid marinate to keep the integrity of the meat.

What is the difference between a pork chop and a pork steak?

A pork chop is cut from the loin where a pork steak is cut from the shoulder. Pork Chops are a bit leaner than the pork steak and cook a bit quicker, making this a great weeknight option. The pork steak has a lot of marbling which lends itself to a juicier steak. Both options are great and I would recommend cooking with whichever cut of meat you have on hand, or according to your personal preference.

How do I know if my pork steak is done?

You will know that your steak is done when a meat thermometer is inserted into the steaks and reads 145°F. For the best results  pull the steaks off the heat at 140°F, allowing the meat to rest and finish cooking for about 5 minutes. This method produces the juiciest and most flavorful steak that will melt in your mouth. You will also want to make sure that when you cut into the steaks that the juices run clear and that the meat is no longer pink.
