When autumn knocks on our door, my craving for apple anything begins to creep in. This simple apple galette recipe is perfect for fall and incredibly simple. This is a great option for an unfussy dessert or afternoon treat.

Autumn is here and the air is getting crisp. Leaves are beginning to fall and sweaters are my go-to wardrobe staple. This is one of my favorite times of the year for so many reasons, but the clothing and food are at the top.

Comfort food is a huge part of autumn, but so is comfort dessert, in my opinion. In the warm months, we naturally crave fresh and cold foods. Fall beckons in cozy on every level and that means that cozy desserts make a comeback when the weather cools.

I made this simple and amazing apple gallete, also known as an apple tart, to scratch that itch and it was plenty satisfied. It is so simple that it can be made over and over without much effort.

I had everything I needed in my kitchen, which is always a major bonus, and the kids gobbled it up with joy. The kids look forward to sweet treats during afternoon tea time and this was the perfect addition, plus it is easy.

The best way to enjoy this is with homemade crust and whipped cream. If you need to know how to make those, I will share both below because it’s worth a tiny bit of effort to elevate this simple fall dessert a bit.

They are both so easy and not intimidating, so don’t be shy about making your own. If you don’t have any desire to make your own, then just grab a refrigerated crust from your store. Now, on to the recipe!

What is an Apple Galette?

An apple galette is simply a flat apple tart or pie that is baked on a flat baking sheet. The sides aren’t raised up like it would be in a pie plate and you can use a pie crust or puff pastry. I prefer the pie crust, but if you want fluffy layers, use a puff pastry.

I like to lay out my pie crust on a baking sheet, layer the sliced apples on the inside in a circular shape, and fold the edges of the pie crust over the outside of the galette. It creates a flaky outer crust and a bubbly and delicious center.

Why you will love this Apple Galette Recipe

You will love this recipe for many reasons, but the main one is that it is almost impossible to mess up. Even if you over bake it on accident, it will, most likely, still taste delish.

This is a great beginner recipe for someone who wants to dip their toes into baking pies, but is intimidated by them. Or, for a pro baker that wants to whip up an autumn dessert without much fuss.

Ingredients for a Simple Apple Galette

  • Pie Crust– You can use a store bought pie crust, homemade pie crust, or even a puff pastry
  • Apples– This is where you can change the flavor of this galette. Choose a tart apple or a sweeter one to make subtle changes to this recipe.
  • Sugar– The sugar is what sweetens this dessert. This recipe calls for granulated sugar (white sugar), but if you want to substitute with brown sugar, simply reduce the amount to 3 tablespoons brown sugar.
  • Vanilla– As always, vanilla is an important part of almost every baking recipe because it builds out the underbelly of most baked goods.
  • Cinnamon– You may also use nutmeg, clove, or pie spice if you want
  • Butter– Can you even bake without butter? I think not!
  • Egg– As with most pastries, doing an egg wash helps to create a beautiful finish on the crust. It also holds on the sugar that you will sprinkle on top prior to baking.

Steps for Making a Simple Apple Galette

  1. Peel, Core, and Slice your apples
  2. Mix with the sugar, butter, vanilla, and cinnamon
  3. Layer the apples inside of the crust, leaving 2-3 inches on the outside perimeter so you can fold it over the apples

Basic Pie Crust Ingredients

If you want to try your hand at a basic pie crust (FYI…. it’s incredibly easy), then follow these simple steps:

  • 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup butter, cold and diced (I dice mine and pop it in the freezer for 15 minutes before using)
  • ¼ cup ice water

Basic Pie Crust Steps

  1. Combine flour and salt in a large mixing bowl and mix.
  2. Use a fork or pastry cutter to cut in the butter until they are pea sized
  3. Stir in water slowly until a dough ball begins to form
  4. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 3 hours (I like to make mine a disc shape so it’s easier to roll out when I need it.)

What to serve with an Apple Galette

  • Whipping Cream- I love making my own whipped cream. It’s simple and always impressive when guests see that you made your own. To make whipping cream, add 1 cup heavy whipping cream to a bowl with 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar. Mix with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form.
  • Salted Caramel– this topping is out of this world good. Making this from scratch makes this dessert feel extra special and the effort is minimal.
  • Ice Cream
  • Nuts
