Chocolate Glazed Donuts
If your family loves moist, cakey donuts, then they will love these chocolate glazed donuts. Not only are they easy to throw together, but they also bake up very quickly.
I grew up not liking chocolate. Can you believe it? I didn’t like chocolate bars, chocolate ice cream, or chocolate cake.
Rest assured, that isn’t the case these days. I often have a dark chocolate bar hidden in the pantry, half opened so I can sneak a piece from time to time.
Not only do I like chocolate, but I love donuts. My love for donuts runs deep and I consider myself somewhat of a donut connoisseur.
When Mark and I travel to the New England states we had a list of donut shops that I wanted to stop at to taste test their flavors. That’s how serious I am about donuts. 😂
While I love being able to run to the local donut shop and grab a dozen donuts, I also like being able to whip them up here at home and skip the fried portion of the donut experience.
Are these healthy like an apple? Nope, but I do like to think that since they are made in my own kitchen, with simple ingredients, and baked rather than fried they are better than the store bought options.
One thing is for sure, they are downright delicious!
Why you’ll love these Chocolate Cake Donuts
Cake donuts are soft and moist, which is why so many people love them. These are no different and the chocolate flavor is so satisfying.
These donuts use simple ingredients and all you have to do is make the batter and pop them in a donut pan. A big bonus is that you whip these up in a bowl, no kitchen mixer needed.
The best part about these donuts is that you can eat them plain, with a chocolate donut glaze, chocolate donut frosting, or with a simple dusting of powdered sugar.
They make a great breakfast or afternoon treat for tea time.
4 Easy Steps for Making Chocolate Glazed Donuts
- Make the Donut batter– This comes together very easily and the dishes wash up in a jiff. Take your dry ingredients and whisk them in a large bowl. Mix your wet ingredients together in a medium size bowl. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix well. If you are lazy like I am, you can mix your dry ingredients in a large bowl, make a well in the middle of the dry ingredients to dump your wet ingredients into and then mix it all together. This eliminates one dish to clean.
- Pour Batter into the Donut Pan– Pour your batter into a gallon sized ziplock bag. Seal it, snip the corner of the bag off, and pipe the batter into the donut pan.
- Bake Donuts and Make the Glaze– While the donuts bake, whip up the glaze in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Dip baked donuts into the glaze– After the donuts are baked, dip them into the glaze and enjoy!
2 Parts to a Chocolate Glaze Donut
- Chocolate Cake Donut– These are made with simple ingredients and come together quickly without any fancy kitchen mixers. I add greek yogurt to my donuts for the same reason I add greek yogurt to my delicious Banana bread, it keeps them super moist. The best part of this recipe is that you can use white or brown sugar. I used white granulated sugar for this recipe, but you can use what you have on hand. These are best eaten the day they are baked, but due to the yogurt, you can also eat them the next day.
- Chocolate Donuts Glaze– This glaze isn’t quite as thick as a frosting, but more like a thin chocolate ganache. It will produce a delicious glaze on the top of your donuts that sweetens this treat.
Tip for baking Chocolate Donuts
This tip doesn’t just go for chocolate donuts, but for most baked goods and sweet breads.
When your timer goes off, or your donuts look like they are done, gently poke the top of the donut and see if your finger indents the top of the donut.
If it does, give it a few more minutes. If the donut springs back up, they are likely finished baking.
Ingredients for Chocolate Donuts
- All-purpose flour- I use all purpose flour, but you can also use a bread or cake flour.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder- This is where the chocolatey flavor comes from. It doesn’t make these donuts super sweet. That comes from the sugar and glaze.
- Baking Powder
- Baking Soda
- Egg
- Sugar- You may use what you have on hand or what your family prefers. This recipe calls for granulated sugar, but use brown sugar if that’s what you have.
- Milk
- Greek Yogurt- I like that greek yogurt is a healthy option, but sour cream works, too.
- Butter
- Vanilla
Chocolate Donuts Glaze Ingredients
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips- You may use whatever chocolate chips/bar you have on hand.
- Heavy Cream- This helps thin out the glaze
- Unsalted butter- If you only have salted butter, that is fine, too. The butter helps the glaze to get that “glassy” look to it once it cools on the donut.
Steps for Making Chocolate Donut Glaze
- Add Chocolate chips, heavy cream and butter to a saucepan and heat up slowly.
- Stir until the chocolate chips are melted and they glaze is velvety.
- Dip your donuts into the glaze and let them sit until the glaze is firm.
Chocolate Frosted Donut
If you would prefer more of a chocolate frosted donut, as opposed to a glazed donut, then mix the ingredients below to create your frosting. You can do this by hand, but it’s faster and creamier when done with a mixer.
A great part about chocolate frosted donuts is that the frosting is strong enough to hold on toppings, such as nuts and sprinkles.
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1-1/2 Tablespoons corn syrup
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 4 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
- 2 cups powdered sugar sifted
