Ingredients for Cinnamon Streusel Muffins

  • Flour– All purpose flour is the best for this recipe.
  • Baking Soda– Baking soda allows these muffins to rise and have a nice fluffy interior.
  • Baking Powder– Baking powder allows the muffins to rise and gives them a nice crisp exterior.
  • Salt– Salt helps to bring out the flavors of the other ingredients.
  • Cinnamon– Cinnamon adds an unmistakable flavor to this muffin.
  • Butter– You want to use unsalted room temperature butter for this recipe. If you have to use salted butter, only add a pinch of salt instead of 1/2 tsp. Use melted butter for the streusel topping.
  • Granulated Sugar– Everyone loves sweet muffins, and sugar is necessary for this recipe.
  • Brown Sugar– Brown sugar has molasses in it. It’s a thicker and moister sugar than granulated sugar. You can use light brown sugar or dark brown sugar.
  • Eggs– Adding eggs to this recipe allows the muffins to rise and bake beautifully.
  • Plain Greek Yogurt– This is my favorite ingredient. Adding Greek yogurt to these muffins adds the perfect amount of tang and creaminess to the batter.
  • Milk– You can use any milk you have on hand.
  • Vanilla Extract– Vanilla has a wonderful aroma and adds sweetness to the recipe.

Make Cinnamon Streusel Muffins in 3 Easy Steps

  1. Preheat the oven– Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a standard muffin tin to prepare for the batter. You can also use muffin liner.
  2. Prepare the ingredients– Cream the butter and sugar together, add in the other wet ingredients. Then add the dry ingredients and mix in a large mixing bowl until smooth. Mix the streusel ingredients together for the top of the muffins in a small bowl and set aside.
  3. Bake– Pour the batter into the prepared muffin cups. Fill each tin 3/4 full. Add Streusel topping and bake for 20 minutes. Enjoy!

Variations for Cinnamon Streusel Muffins

  • Pumpkin Pie Spice– Try pumpkin pie spice if you want to give these muffins a fall twist.
  • Coconut Sugar– If you don’t have brown sugar on hand you can use coconut sugar as a substitute.
  • Sour Cream– Using sour cream will add even more of a tangy flavor than Greek yogurt and is an excellent substitute.
  • Coconut and Almond Milk– These two milk substitutes can be used in place of dairy milk.
  • Gluten-free Flour– Use gluten-free flour for any gluten allergies or sensitivities.

Tips for Making Cinnamon Streusel Muffins

  • Make sure to use unsalted butter in this recipe. If you don’t have any on hand, you can use salted butter, just adjust the salt content of this recipe to avoid an over salted muffin.
  • Since this is a baked item, it is important to follow the measurements shown in the recipe. Too many adjustments can allow your muffin to be too dense or even overly mushy.
  • You can use substitutions for the items like flour, sugar, and yogurt.
  • I like to use paper liners in the muffin tins. This allows the muffins to be more easily transported, creates less mess, and makes for a beautiful presentation.
  • You will be tempted to eat them right away, but allow the muffins to cool on a wire rack before serving or freezing.
  • If you don’t have time to get your butter to room temperature, just try this trick. Pour boiling water into a glass and then pour the water out. Place the warm glass over your butter for a couple of minutes until your butter is nice and soft. Voila!

Add-Ins for Cinnamon Streusel Muffins

  • Nuts– Chopped walnuts or pecans would be delicious added to the streusel topping, or even mixed into the batter.
  • Chocolate or White Chocolate Chips– Chocolate makes anything more delicious!
  • Cream Cheese Filling– Mix 8 oz. of softened cream cheese with 1 cup of powdered sugar. Place a dollop of muffin batter at the bottom of the tin, then add the cream cheese mixture in the center of the muffins, then add another dollop of batter before adding the streusel mixture on top.

How Do You Store Leftover Cinnamon Streusel Muffins?

Instead of storing on the counter, I like to store these in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 2-3 days.

These muffins also make a great freezer option when you want to have some quick and easy breakfasts on the go.

Simply cool the muffins to room temperature and store individually in saran wrap and place in a zip lock bag.

When you are ready to eat, simply pop them in the microwave for a quick and easy treat.

How Do You Reheat Cinnamon Streusel Muffins?

When you are ready to reheat, cover completely with a paper towel and warm in the microwave for 20 seconds.

If you have a little bit more time and want to avoid having a soggy topping, warm in a preheated oven at 300 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until warmed through.

These are also delicious at room temperature.
