What is Garlic Dip?

This is a creamy, flavorful, and simple garlic dip that is very garlic forward.

The mixture of Greek yogurt and sour cream is the perfect base for any dip, and the fresh minced garlic really elevates this recipe.

The taste of this dip reminds me of a fresh baked loaf of garlic bread, but in a creamy dip.

The flavors of this dip are very prominent in a lot of Lebanese and other Middle Eastern dishes, such as Lebanese garlic sauce or Lebanese toum.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • The dip is great served with some fresh bread and tastes amazing with some fresh raw vegetables, crackers, pita bread, homemade tortilla chips, or even french fries.
  • With such simple ingredients, this dip is a very versatile recipe that can be made with a number of substitutions or served with so many different sides.
  • Not only is this recipe great as a dip, you could also omit the cream cheese and add some lemon juice for a more sauce-like consistency and serve alongside some chicken skewers. Then it becomes more like a garlic dipping sauce.
  • From start to finish this dip comes together in less than five minutes. You will love having this recipe on hand when you need to pull something together quickly.
  • Using fresh garlic makes this dip have an unmistakable flavor that is bold and a little spicy. You could use roasted garlic in this dip for a more mild and smoky flavor.
  • All of the ingredients are easily found at your local grocery store.

  • Ease– With minimal prep and ingredients you already have on hand, this recipe is as easy as they come.
  • Time– All of the ingredients in this recipe are just measured out and combined. You will find that it takes more time putting the ingredients away than you will actually spend making this dip.

Ingredients for Garlic Dip

  • Greek Yogurt– This adds a great sour note that smooths out the bold garlic flavor.
  • Cream Cheese Adding cream cheese makes this dip ridiculously smooth and creamy.
  • Garlic– This dip would not be a garlic dip without it! It uses over one entire head of garlic.
  • Worcestershire Sauce– A small tablespoon adds a great bold umami flavor to this dip and adds a great flavor layer to this recipe. You can substitute with soy sauce or lemon juice if you don’t have any on hand.
  • Chives– I like to add some fresh chives to the top of the dip to give a pop of color and some added freshness. You can also use green onions or diced red onions if you don’t have any chives available to you.
  • Milk– Milk helps bind together the recipe and adds moisture.
  • Kosher Salt or Sea Salt– Salt adds just the right flavor and brings out the taste of the other ingredients.
  • Black Pepper– The pepper adds a tad of spiciness to the recipe.

Make Garlic Dip in 3 Easy Steps

  1. Add all of the ingredients– Add the ingredients to a medium mixing bowl and beat with an electric mixer until creamy and smooth.
  2. Serve– Serve the dip with crackers, veggies, pretzels, or anything of your choice.
  3. Refrigerate– Keep refrigerated and store in an airtight container.

Substitutions for Garlic Dip Ingredients

  • Non-dairy Sour Cream or Non-dairy Cream Cheese– These ingredients can be substituted for those with dairy restrictions.
  • Lemon Juice– If you would like it to be more of a sauce, you can omit the cream cheese and add lemon instead.
  • Garlic Paste– One teaspoon of garlic paste is equal to one garlic head.
  • Soy Sauce– This can be used as a substitute for Worcestershire sauce if you would like.

Tips for Making the Best Garlic Dip

  • Make sure that you use minced garlic in order to allow the garlic flavor to blend into the dip evenly. I find that larger chunks of garlic can be a bit too strong when bitten into. Make sure that the papery skins of the garlic bulbs do not get into your dip.
  • Garlic goes so well with so many different recipes; the possibilities for how to serve this dip are endless.
  • If you do not have a garlic press you can use a small food processor or a micro plane and grate the garlic into the dip.
  • Make sure that you have your cream cheese at room temperature in order to mix together evenly.
  • If you don’t have a stand mixer, you can use a hand mixer, immersion blender, or even a spatula.
  • You can add more or less garlic depending on your preferences.

Add-Ins for Garlic Dip

  • Fresh herbs– Add in fresh herbs of your choice.

How Do You Store Leftover Garlic Dip?

Store any leftover dip in a small airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

I don’t recommend using plastic wrap or beeswax covers as they do not create a tight enough seal and will allow moisture to get inside.

This dip can be served cold or at room temperature and tastes even better if left in the refrigerator overnight so that the flavors have a chance to blend together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you eat garlic dip with?

This is a very versatile dip that is great served with potato chips, crackers, pretzels, bread, or fresh veggies. Be creative! You can even serve this dip alongside some roasted chicken or grilled lamb. You could omit the cream cheese if you want the dip to have more of a sauce like consistency.

What makes garlic dip so creamy?

The cream cheese is the ingredient that elevates this dish from a sauce to a dip. Make sure that the cream cheese is softened at room temperature in order to ensure that all the ingredients mix together easily. Your dip will also be a lot creamier if you are using full fat sour cream and yogurt in your dip.
