These Rice Krispie treats are the best because they require only a few ingredients and, with one or two strategic tweaks to the classic recipe, becomes even better! Your friends and family will go crazy over these!
Rice Krispie treats are a classic and you don’t usually mess with classics, but I make an exception for this.
You still only need four ingredients, but the amount and how you combine them is what takes this treat to the next level!
Ingredients for Rice Krispie Treats
- Butter- Most recipes call for 4 tablespoons, but this one requires 6 tablespoons and it makes all of the difference.
- Mini Marshmallows- Yes, you must get the mini marshmallows and I suggest the jet puffed brand. Off brands work for some recipes, but when the marshmallows are the star of the show, I suggest the name brand.
- Rice Krispie cereal- Again, be sure to use the name brand. The cereal holds up better and tastes the best.
- Vanilla- Just a touch of vanilla makes these treats extra special.
How to make these in 3 easy steps
- Melt butter and marshmallows- I use the microwave for this and heat them in a glass bowl at 30 second intervals, stirring in between. Reserve 1 cup of marshmallows for step 2.
- Add the cereal and 1 cup Marshmallows- Stir in your cereal until coated and add in the reserved cup of marshmallows.
- Press into a pan- I butter a 9×13 baking dish and press the treat mixture into the pan using a small piece of parchment paper.
Tips for making Rice Krispie Treats
- Use name brand ingredients- I suggest using the name brand cereal and marshmallows. They taste better and create the texture you’re wanting with these treats.
- Reserve one cup of mini marshmallows- You definitely want to use mini marshmallows and you want to hold back 1 cup for the very end. This is what gives you the extra gooeyness to the treat.
- Extra butter- Be sure to use 6 tablespoons of butter to help keep these treats extra moist.
- Touch of vanilla- This adds a layer to the flavor that puts them over the edge!

- 1 9×13 baking dish
Ingredients
- 6 tablespoons salted butter
- 16 ounces mini marshmallows
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 6 cups Rice Krispie cereal
Instructions
- Butter the bottom and sides of a 9×13 baking dish.
- In a large microwave safe bowl, add your butter and marshmallows, reserving 1 cup of marshmallows for later. Pour all of the marshmallows in the bowl, except for 1 cup- save that for later.
- Microwave for 30 seconds and then stir. Repeat until the butter is melted and the marshmallows are creamy.
- Add in the vanilla and stir. Add in the cereal and stir carefully.
- Once the cereal is combined, add the reserved marshmallows and stir well.
- Press the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Let cool. Slice and enjoy.
