We have been using essential oils in our home for over 6 years. What began as a search for something that could help purify our air has now become a daily part of life for our family.

At any given time, a diffuser filled with a yummy scent is running. Maybe it’s Lemongrass to give off a refreshing scent. Or, possibly we are diffusing Christmas Spirit in anticipation for the season ahead.

The kids always come down to breakfast with something yummy diffusing in our Aria diffuser. I had no idea how much essential oils would impact us when I bought my first oils, but I’m so glad I brought them into our home.

Whatever the reason is for you having oils diffusing, having the best essential oil diffuser for your space is key for enjoying your oils.

How do essential oil diffusers work?

Diffusers are machines that plug into the wall and diffuse water plus essential oils into the air.

The ceramic, or steel, disc in the center of the diffuser vibrates, allowing the water to form a mist that fills the air with the essential oils.

Not only do you get the benefits of the essential oils being in the air around you, but the mist also helps maintain a good humidity level.

Benefits of Diffusing Essential Oils

It goes without saying, but diffusing essential oils has many benefits. The most important thing to know is that you are diffusing PURE essential oils.

Not all essential oils are created equal and if your goal is to bring health benefits to your home, you want to make sure you aren’t using oils with fillers and synthetics. Be sure to research which oils are best for you!

  1. Purify Air– Essential oils purify the air and also make your home smell amazing.
  2. Health Benefits– Different oils bring about different health benefits, making diffusing not only yummy to smell, but great for our bodies.
  3. Mood– Certain essential oil scents can greatly impact someone’s mood. For example, if you are feeling tired and unproductive, diffusing Lemon, or a citrus, can help to boost your mood!
  4. Encourage Relaxation– Oils have long been known to help support sleep and relaxation. Lavender and other stress relieving oils are diffused to help relax the body.

How long do essential oil diffusers last?

High quality essential oil diffusers can last for years if they’ve been cared for properly. Cheaper varieties might not have as long of an expiration date due to the use of cheaper parts.

It’s important to purchase diffusers that use parts that can withstand the use of essential oils. Pure essential oils require a specific plastic.

Generally speaking, diffusers last around 4000 hours. The most common cause for needing to replace an essential oil diffuser is the ceramic disk and it wearing down and no longer being able to diffuse the water and oil.

Some diffusers have replacement parts that can be swapped out to keep the life of the diffuser going.

What is an Ultrasonic Diffuser?

An ultrasonic diffuser has several benefits and is just one of the types of diffusers you can choose. Ultrasonic diffusers have a plate, like mentioned above, that agitates the water and creates a mist.

The diffuser is filled with water and oil is dropped on top of the water. As the vibrations move the water, the water lifts the oils into the air in ultra-fine particles.

Ultrasonic diffusers add humidity to the air and are, generally speaking, very cost effective. They also require less essential oil compared to, say, a nebulizer diffuser.

Another benefit for using this type of diffuser is how quiet it is when it runs. You barely even notice that it’s running!

How much essential oil to add to a diffuser?

Two things are considered when deciding how much essential oil to add to a diffuser:

  1. The size of the diffuser and the room
  2. How strong you want the scent to be

Typically, around 5 drops of pure essential oil are added to a diffuser. If a stronger scent is desired, or the room is quite large, you may add anywhere from 7-10 drops of essential oil to the diffuser you are using.

How to clean your ultrasonic diffuser

Keeping your diffuser clean will extend the life of your diffuser. Once a week, give it a quick wipe down, using these steps, to ensure that you have your diffuser for years to come:

  1. Always dump old diffuser water out before filling with new water.
  2. Wipe out the base of the diffuser with a soft rag or sponge. Be sure to gently wipe off the ceramic/steel plate to make sure it doesn’t get any build up.
  3. Allow your diffuser to air dry for a few hours in between uses.
  4. Only use pure essential oils. Any oils with synthetic fillers will drastically reduce the life of your diffuser.

How much square footage does a diffuser cover?

The amount of square footage a diffuser will cover is solely dependent on the diffuser you have. Each diffuser covers a different square footage.

The average square footage a diffuser will cover is around 400 square feet with a large diffuser, such as the Aria, covering around 1000 square feet.

Can you put Essential Oils in Humidifier?

Many people wonder if they can skip the diffuser and simply put essential oils in the humidifier. Most humidifier brands specifically state that essential oils aren’t for use in their humidifiers.

One reason is that the parts of the humidifier haven’t been made to work with the potency of essential oils. The essential oils are potent and you won’t get the maximum benefits from them if used in a humidifier. Plus, you risk the oils eating away at a plastic not made to withstand the use of oils.

While humidifiers do disperse a vapor in the air, they aren’t created to carry essential oils into the air. That’s the bonus of an ultrasonic diffuser. They do both!
